The volumes listed in this section contain a selection of papers presented at the Neurosciences and Music conferences, organized by the Mariani Foundation, with cooperation from the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). These volumes have been published in the prestigious NYAS Annals.
The NYAS Annals is the oldest continuously published scientific serial in the United States and among the most cited of multidisciplinary scientific serials worldwide. Established in 1823, the Annals offers proceedings of conferences organized by NYAS and other scientific organizations, annual reviews in key topics, and selected invited volumes.

This special issue provides a snapshot and current state of music neuroscience, and may also provide a useful introduction to the modern study of the potential benefits of musical sound and engagement on health and well-being. It includes the latest research in neurosciences and music from contributors across 16 countries coming from multiple disciplines and diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives. One theme of the volume addresses the effects of musical training across the lifespan. This includes children, adolescents, training of different genres in young adults, and older adults. Behavioral and neurophysiological work from non-human animals are also represented. Genetic and developmental contributions to musical aptitude are considered, encompassing a wide range of abilities including prodigies and people with exceptional skills. Clinical and translational work covered in this issue range from very early musical interventions to support infant development, to a multitude of disorders, including Landau-Kleffner syndrome – a childhood epileptic disorder, developmental stuttering, dyslexia, developmental coordination disorder, autism, and specific language impairment, as well as recovery from stroke, and effects of musical interventions on Alzheimer’s disease and age-related hearing loss. The volume also addresses fundamental questions in the field that pertain to short-term memory, emotion and the predictive processes of the brain, cultural evolution and the roles of rhythm and entrainment, as well as the similarities and differences between brain processes for music and language and for music and voice, and effects of linguistic experience and the nature of interactions between multiple sensory systems and between multiple individuals.

Recent research has demonstrated that cognitive stimulation, including from musical activities, may improve cognitive and motor functions in healthy individuals, and may provide nonpharmacological approaches for recovering brain and motor functions after brain damage, disease, or delayed mental development in neurological patients. This Annals volume presents a collection of papers stemming from the conference “Neurosciences and Music V,” held in Dijon, France, on May 29 to June 1, 2014, highlighting neuroscience research on the unique contributions of music to programs of cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation, including music-based interventions in neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. A range of topics were covered, including the contribution of rhythm and the temporal structure of music to language development, language rehabilitation, attentional processes, motor abilities, and motor rehabilitation, as well as socialization of infants; the fundamental links between music and movement in musically trained and untrained people, and in neurological patients; the impact of dance on brain plasticity; the positive effects of music on nonmusical abilities in children and adults; the role of music for emotional regulation in infants and, more generally, infants’ well-being; and the efficiency of music intervention in dementia.

The Neurosciences and Music IV: Learning and Memory was held at the University of Edinburgh from 9-12 June 2011, jointly hosted by the Mariani Foundation and the Institute for Music in Human and Social Development (IMHSD) and involving nearly 500 international delegates. Two opening workshops, three large and vibrant poster sessions and nine specialized symposia presented the most current research findings and raised a multitude of challenging questions. The conference proceedings are introduced by the workshop and symposia leaders, on the topics of working with children, rhythm perception, language processing, cultural learning, memory, musical imagery, neural plasticity, stroke rehabilitation, autism and amusia. The rich, interdisciplinary nature of this expanding research area is immediately evident, showing great promise for the future of music neuroscience.

How does human nervous system create musical experience? Can we harness that knowledge to help understand brain function and dysfunction? These questions have become a topic of fascination in the past decade not only to the specialists, psychologists and neuroscientists, but also to musicians, educators, clinicians, and the general public. To further our scientific understanding, this volume contains a selection of papers presented at the third Neurosciences of Music conference, held in June 2008 at McGill University in Montreal. The theme of the meeting, “Disorders and Plasticity,” sums up the focus, which was to see how basic science discoveries can be applied within the clinical domain, and to understand how musical functions both depend upon and modify brain activity and structure. Each chapter reflects the themes of a series of symposia, organized and edited by some of the most well-known investigators in these fields, providing a summary of the latest cutting-edge research in this rapidly moving field.

The intricate relationships between music and human neurological makeup, as well as the ways in which music can influence neurological development, are explored in this volume, which is a continuation and expansion of two symposia that have preceded it, both of which have been published as Annals volumes. Our understanding of how the production and perception of music correlates with brain anatomy and activity has been enormously enriched in recent years. Numerous studies have identified the similarities and differences between the processes underlying musical function and those related to speech. In addition, new studies have defined precise correlations between the development of motor skills and the perception and production of musical sequences. Musicians and composers, as well as neuroscientists, have benefited from new insights on how the brain functions, and a growing number of composers have begun to construct sounds and sound objects based on models and information that have come from biological and psychological studies. This Annals volume presents reports from researchers in the neurobiological, neuropsychological, and developmental aspects of music, as well as from musicians interested in elaborating the modalities and peculiarities of musical perception and construction. It is organized around several major themes: Cerebral functions related to music; how brain scientists use music; how musicians use brain research; and music and the developing brain.
